What to Wear for Family Photos (Spring & Summer Guide) | Central Massachusetts Family Photographer

A relaxed wardrobe guide for natural, timeless family photos

One of the most common questions for any photo session is:
“What should we wear?”

The good news? You don’t need to overthink it.

The goal for your family photos isn’t perfectly styled outfits — it’s capturing connection, movement, and real moments. The right clothing simply supports that story.

This guide will help you choose outfits that feel natural, photograph beautifully, and still feel like you.

If you haven’t already, you can learn more about my approach to family photography sessions.

Start With Comfort (Always)

If you’re uncomfortable, it will show.

Choose clothing that:

  • Fits well (not too tight, not oversized)

  • Allows for movement (walking, sitting, picking up kids)

  • Feels familiar — not something you’ve never worn before

When everyone is comfortable, moments unfold more naturally.

Choose a Soft, Cohesive Color Palette

Soft, neutral tones photograph beautifully in natural outdoor locations across Central Massachusetts — especially during golden hour sessions.

Rather than matching outfits exactly, aim for coordination.

A good rule of thumb:

  • Pick 1–2 main colors

  • Add 2–3 neutral or complementary tones

Spring & Summer Friendly Colors

  • Cream, ivory, beige

  • Soft blues, sage, olive

  • Muted blush, warm browns, light denim

  • Subtle florals or gentle patterns

Avoid overly bright or neon colors — they tend to overpower skin tones and distract from faces.

Coordinate, Don’t Match

Everyone doesn’t need to wear the same thing.

Instead:

  • Mix solids with subtle patterns

  • Vary textures (linen, knits, cotton)

  • Keep the overall tone consistent

Think of your family as a color story, not a uniform.

Let Texture Do the Work

Texture adds depth without distraction.

Great options:

  • Linen dresses or shirts

  • Knits, lace, or chambray

  • Soft layers like cardigans or light jackets

Texture photographs beautifully and keeps outfits visually interesting without stealing attention.

Dress for the Location

Whether your session takes place at home in a Worcester County park, or along the North Shore in Newburyport or Plumb Island, your outfits should reflect the setting.

Your environment matters.

  • Outdoor fields / parks: Earth tones, soft neutrals

  • At home: Cozy, lived-in pieces, bare feet welcome

  • Urban settings: Slightly more structured but still relaxed

  • Beach / summer light: Light fabrics, airy colors, minimal layers

If you’re unsure, I’m always happy to help you choose outfits based on your session location

Shoes Matter More Than You Think

Shoes often appear in photos — especially during walking or candid moments.

Choose:

  • Neutral sandals, boots, or simple sneakers

  • Shoes that match the tone of the outfits

  • Comfort over style (especially for kids)

Barefoot is always a great option for in-home or beach sessions.

Dress Kids First, Then Build Around Them

Kids’ clothing often sets the tone.

Once you choose their outfits:

  • Coordinate adult outfits around those colors

  • Keep adults more neutral if kids have patterns

  • Let kids be kids — movement and play are welcome

What to Avoid

To keep photos timeless, avoid:

  • Large logos or graphics

  • Neon or very bold colors

  • Busy or distracting patterns

  • Clothing that requires constant adjusting

  • Everyone wearing identical outfits

Simple Outfit Checklist

Before your session, ask:

  • Do these outfits feel comfortable?

  • Do the colors work together?

  • Can everyone move easily?

  • Do the clothes reflect our everyday style?

If the answer is yes — you’re set.

A Final Thought

The best family photos don’t come from perfect outfits.
They come from connection, movement, and being present with the people you love.

You don’t need to get everything “right.”
You just need to show up as yourselves.
